What's a FUN-raiser?

FUN-raisers are free opportunities to get together with other people in the area (Beth-El members, members of other synagogues, unaffiliated Jews, non-Jews) to do a little learning, schmooze, and mostly, to have fun. Three Temple Beth-El Fun-raisers were scheduled this summer.

FUN-raiser #1 - Screening of Ushpizin and follow-up discussion (June, 2008)

2008 Summer Fun-raiser 1: Rabbi Brickman and Cantor Marx lead discussion after showing of Israeli film, Ushpizin.

2008 Summer Fun-raiser 1: Great discussion following screening of Ushpizin.

Despite a torrential downpour of Biblical proportions, over 30 people joined in the viewing of the award-winning Israeli film, Ushpizin (The Guests) . Rabbi Brickman and Cantor Marx led a spriited discussion after the film.

Fun-raiser #2 - Music, Mezuzah, Mitzvah! (July, 2008)

Summer Fun-raiser 2: Two generations of the Edelman family decorating mezuzah covers.

Summer Fun-raiser 2: Something about learning about mitzvot and mezuzahs just makes you feel like dancing!

Stellar musician Ben Rauch and TBE's own Religious School teacher, Kay Magilavy, teamed up to offer an exploration of the mitzvah of the mezuzah in storytelling and song. Each family attending went home with at least one complete mezuzah.

Fun-raiser #3 - An Evening of Jewish Art Music (August, 2008)

Five student cantors gave a captivating performance.

The audience gets into the act with a four-part round.

Student Cantors Josh Breitzer, David Frommer, Sharon Kunitz, Jamie Marx, and Mary Thomas performed a fabulous hour of Jewish music - some familiar from the Shabbat liturgy, and others new and inventive. Every piece was breathtakingly beautiful. The evening began with a wine and cheese reception and ended with a very lovely havdallah ritual, bringing Shabbat to a perfect close.

Watch the website for the next round of FUN-raisers, after the High Holy Days.
