The wisdom literature contains many commentaries on works of community service and taking leadership in the doing of Mitzvot, including giving Tzedaka. Here are three to ponder, as translated by Danny Siegel in his book "Where Heaven and Earth Touch."
"And they that lead the many to righteousness will be like the stars for ever and ever" (Daniel 12:3)
-This refers to Tzedakah collectors ... this refers to people who teach Torah to little children.
- Bava Batra 8b
Every day, the Holy One, blessed be He,
Sings the praises of three kinds of people --
single people who live in a city and do not sin,
poor people who return lost articles to their rightful owners,
and wealthy people who do Tzedakah quietly
- Pesachim 113a
Even though Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah assumed a position of distinguished leadership in the community -- nevertheless, he lived a long life.
- Jerusalem Talmud, Berachot 1:6
The congregants of Temple Beth-El are grateful for the leadership roles taken by all who act on the Board, and on the committees. You are truly the lifeblood of our community.
